Lot Description:Rare Feather Adornment
Decorative scarf or belt, the base is traditionally constructed using wool and muka with a silk backing. Completely covered in plump Kiwi feathers. Leading to tapering ends with bands of Kaka, Tui and Kakariki feathers.
L.1260mm, W.100mm. -
Provenance:Formally in the collection of Thomas Ryan, 1864-1927 . He had a distinguished career as an artist, working mainly in watercolours. He was well known for his Maori portraits and for his landscapes and seascapes. He was a friend of Charles Goldie. This item was present in his studio and highly likely used to adorn his subjects. Private collection, New Zealand.
