Lot Description:Rare Feather Adornment
Decorative scarf, the body constructed of a woven muka band to pairs of tassels to both ends. Body completely covered in plump Kiwi and Kaka feathers.
L.970mm, W.30mm. -
Provenance:Formally in the collection of Thomas Ryan, 1864-1927 . He was one of the outstanding rugby footballers in New Zealand during the 1880s. Ryan also had a distinguished career as an artist, working mainly in watercolours. He was well known for his Maori portraits and for his landscapes and seascapes. He was a friend of Charles Goldie. This item was present in his studio and highly likely used to adorn his subjects. Private collection, New Zealand.
