Important Rei Niho Paraoa - Whalebone Adornment
Very rare chest adornment of flattened form, the outside edge with raised triangular cut outs, inside edge is serrated with rib form cut outs to the body. Two pierced holes for suspension, made from whalebone. Dry weathered patina, of great age. They were most likely carved some time before 1600, but very little is known of their origin. Holes in the top would have enabled them to be lashed together with its partner. Only about 20 pieces have ever been found, including single pieces thought to belong to a pair; most have been found in the South Island of New Zealand, though four have come from North Island sites.
