    D - 1850-56 Letters written by Caroline Adams (20 April 1850 & 9 April 1856) or Susan Quintall (25 March 1850)
to Mrs Celia J. Parnell in California or England. The 9th April 1856 letter acknowledges a letter sent from England on 1st March 1855 and includes "we have heard that we are to be removed to Norfolk Island in August or September next. I do think that many of us would hardly survive a removal from here, being born and brought up on the island, consequently everything we hold dear is connected with it .... you had better address your letters to Norfolk Island via Sydney". The 20th April 1850 letter describes the excitement caused by the arrival of an English barque bound for California with six passengers on board which stopped for water; the Captain landed five passengers and his supercargo and told them they could spend the night on the island as he would pick them up with provisions, the following day prior to sailing, but after four days the barque was seen to sail off leaving the five passengers stranded on the island! The recipient of these letters, had visited the island with her husband on the schooner "Rose". Three exceptional early letters from Pitcairn Island. (3)
