  • Lot Description:
    C - 1859 (July 16) Geelong - London registered cover (restored edges)
"Per Northam via Marseilles" with mixed franking of 1/6, all tied by "6" barred numerals, with red oval London Registered datestamp below. On reverse Geelong and red London E.C. (Sept.19) cds's. The P & O "Northam" ran aground on a reef in the Red Sea for five days. The mail was recovered with no mention of any water damage. The rate from Victoria to England was 6d per half ounce via Southampton or 10d via Marseilles; the Registration Fee was 1/-. When originally posted, this cover must have been fully prepaid at 1/10d, hence the apparent missing stamp at upper right must have been another 4d. There are also pin holes where the missing 4d stamp was once affixed. All these factors, plus the waterstaining show that at least part of the recovered mail was water affected.
