Notes:After rejecting the winning entries in the 1911 competition, Postmaster-General Frazer commissioned Blamire Young of the Victorian Artist's Asssociation to prepare alternative designs. It is recorded that Young delivered ten designes to thte Postmaster-General in January 1912, and a recently discovered press announcement indicates that one of these designs showed a Kangaroo superimposed on a map of Australia. There are nine recorded First Essays in seven different denominations based on this design, of which five were acquired at the Williamson auction in London in 1981 by R.T.P. Chapman, whose collection was subsequently acquired intact by Australia Post. Of the nine known examples of this type only three are in private hands. The present 2?d, an imperforate 1/- in brownish red & blue and a rouletted 5/- in green & carmine. BW: KE2 Cat.$80,000.
