Lot Description:P - 1911 Stamp Design Competition entry by E.T. Luke
1d map of Australia, surmounted by the royal crown and with AUSTRALIA contained in a boomerang-shaped frame; original pen and ink artwork (90 x 116mm) in black on thick artboard (228 x 285mm) with a stamp-size photographic reproduction in black affixed below [BW:E122F]; signed "Haereo" (Luke's nom de plume) at right. Also affixed at the base are five additional stamp-size "Pigmented Gum-Bichromate prints" in different colours, these essays (each unique) depict the artwork complete in wine-red and in four other colours with blank value squares at the top and blank value tablet at base. (BW:E122A-E) This magnificent example of original competition artwork retains Luke's handwritten explanation of his design affixed on the back: "White Australia", the premier island of the world, a dependency of the crown, attached thereto by silken threads, is in direct communication with the Nerve Centres of the Four Quarters of the Globe.
