Lot Description:Chambers Family
A photograph album chiefly relating to the Chambers family and Te Mata Estate, Hawke's Bay -
Notes:c1900's, folio. Brown cloth album with 'N. Z. Photos. G. B H.' in gilt to upper board. Binding weak. Photographs mounted in with occasional annotations. Image size varies but most are 145mm x 95mm. John Chambers was one of the earliest land owners in Hawke's Bay and established Te Mata Station in 1854, before dividing up the land amongst his family in 1886. Te Mata went to his son Bernard, establishing him as the major owner. Bernard's interest in wine-making was kindled by a French guest at Te Mata homestead, who pointed out the viticultural potential of the surrounding slopes. The first vines struck root at Te Mata Vineyard in 1892. The business flourished and Te Mata Estate Winery continues to rank as the foremost wine producer in the region. Images depict a variety of scenes from the surrounding areas, with several family portraits including Bernard and Georgina seated on the first motor vehicle in Hawke's Bay, 1903. Eighty four images in total. Please contact the department for further information. G.
