Notes:1st ed. London : Longman, Brown, Green, and Longmans, 1848, 8vo. xlviii, 290 p., [7] leaves of plates, illus., (some col.), ports. 4668. Rebacked. Original red cloth covers mounted to maroon boards. Wear to corners. Publishers advertisement and inscription to lining papers. Further inscriptions to fly leaf. Excision to title page. Occasional foxing to contents. 'Power, Commissariat Officer for the British forces engaged in operations in the Hutt Valley and Wanganui, gives a good account of his experiences and impressions. General introduction outlining the history of settlement displaying a not uncritical sympathy with the New Zealand Company. Auckland a 'beggarly collection of poverty-stricken huts and wooden houses' and Wellington 'scarcely more pleasing' ; Te Rauparaha and his son, Otaki, Wanganui village, the Gilfillan murder, etc, with much perceptive comment.' - Bagnall.
