Lot Description:A rare and internationally significant silver and gold coffin pin (nail) from the tomb of the Egyptian Pharaoh Tutankhamun
The nail probably came from the second sarcophagus. Weight 10.43gms, length 57mm. -
Provenance:Reported Provenance: Gifted by Howard Carter to his brother A.T.Carter, a barrister, who gifted it to his Goddaughter Patience Henn Collins (daughter of Justice Henn Collins) and later married to become Patience Lumley (a good friend of our vendor’s father). Patience Lumley became our vendor’s Godmother.

Notes:Note: Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 in the Valley of the Kings. The details surrounding this and the documenting of the treasures enclosed have been well recorded. A few smaller ‘souvenirs’ were evidently not so well documented and have been spread far and a number of similar silver and gold nails are known to exist in other international collections. There is a record dated 2nd January 1926 regarding an analysis of a ‘silver nail with gold head from 1st or 2nd coffin’ from the tomb of ‘Tut.ankh.Amen’. This particular nail weighed 10.09gms, similar to the vendor’s nail. An approximate analysis of the metals (gold, silver, copper, palladium - based on a preliminary XRF analysis) in the unusual gold and silver alloys used in this nail is available on request.
