The scow ‘The Echo’ was built for the Northland timber trade in 1905 and eventually worked all round the NZ coast. Perhaps NZ’s most famous scow she crossed Cook Strait more than 15.000 times. During WWII she was requisitioned by the US Navy and served as a patrol vessel in the Pacific Islands. Armed with hidden deck guns she was stopped by a Japanese sub which surfaced to sink her but was instead damaged by the Echo. A movie “The Wackiest ship in the Army” was made in 1961 starring Jack Lemmon and Ricky Nelson. She serves today as the headquarters of the Marlborough Cruising Club and as a café and bar.
