Notes:A talented painter from an early age, Sir William Dobell OBE was selected to travel to London in 1929 as recipient of the New South Wales Society of Artists Travelling Art Scholarship. Having returned from London and wider Europe a decade later in 1939, the assimilation of influences from Rembrandt to Renoir appealed to a wide range of audiences. He drew a conservative following due to the fact that he exhibited at the Royal Academy, but ultimately produced work of a more modernist style. He later became known in Australian art circles for his success in the Archibald prize in 1943. Drafted into the Civil Construction Corps at age 42, and later appointed an official war artist, in that time Dobell was exposed to a host of experiences that inspired a number of his key works; The Billy Boy, The Strapper, Scotty Allan and The Cypriot. James Gleeson once commented that Dobell had an extraordinary ability 'to adjust his style to the nature of the personality he is portraying.' He was renowned for drawing out distinctive traits, as is evident in Head of a Boy. The work exudes youthful innocence and an intensity of presence that saw its inclusion next to the aforementioned works in the 224-work retrospective exhibition at The Art Gallery of New South Wales in 1964.
