Lot Description:CASED ENGLISH JOSEPH MANTON S/B PERCUSSION FOWLER
16G; 30" barrel struck with early 1780 London proofs; barrel engraved JOSEPH MANTON HANOVER SQUARE LONDON; platinum poincion to breech marked with CROWN & DAVID FARROW; borderline engraved lock also decorated with trophies, flags, quiver, arrows & music book; pineapple finial t/guard engraved with the same decoration as the lock & butt tang; g. profiles, clear address & engraving; grey patina to barrel, lock, fittings & butt plate; 80% blue to t/guard; vg oyster ash stock with chequered wrist & horn forend cap; all complete; gwo & cond. Presented in an oak case; half circle brass lid handle; DAVID FARROW GUNMAKER TO THE FOYAL FAMILY 370 STRAND LONDON label; partitioned & lined in blue/green velvet; having a vg complement of accessories. This interesting fowler started its life as a flintlock, C.1780, then a pellet lock in 1817 & finally converted to take the new copper cap, C.1825. David Farrow possibly refurbished the fowler, restocked it in oyster ash & cased it to its present configuration. A most interesting Joe Manton. Provenance ex Doug Mills. -
