Notes:Artist represented by Anna Schwartz Gallery, Sydney and Melbourne. In 1964 Gallery A opened in Sydney with a bravura exhibition of works by Janet Dawson, Colin Lanceley, John Olsen and Robert Klippel. The following year Klippel held a solo exhibition at Gallery A, which included this sculpture, No.182. In reviewing the exhibition, Wallace Thornton noted the wit and refinement of Klippel's sculptures, commenting that 'when he is at his most fragile- when wires and cogs (or whimsical keys) move in delicate adjustments - Klippel shows more clearly his latest variations on his chosen themes.' (Wallace Thornton, The Sydney Morning Herald, 1 December 1965) Ann Lewis admired the sculpture of Robert Klippel throughout her life. During an interview in 2008, she was asked to nominate some of her favourite artists and responded succinctly, 'Klippel was my hero. He was extraordinary, I think.' (Gallery A Sydney, 1964-1983, exhibition catalogue, 2009, p.131). John Murphy
