Notes:In 1970 a subsidiary of Gallery A was opened by Max Hutchinson (1925-1999) in New York at 127 Greene Street, SoHo. As well as exhibiting Australian artists in his New York gallery, Hutchinson arranged for paintings by American artists to be sent to Australia. Painters including Milton Resnick, Edwin Ruda and Murray Reich were shown in Sydney between 1970 and 1974. Many of the New York artists were associated with the movement known as Lyrical Abstraction, and their works were shown in Sydney soon after it evolved in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Edwin Ruda's Mixing crux and crocks, 1969 was exhibited at Gallery A Sydney in 1971. The critic and artist, Elwyn Lynn, drew special attention to the painting in his review of the exhibition, believing that the work 'best exemplifies the new lyricism with its stack of five broad bands, breaking here and there from their smoky stains in casual yellow, expanding flesh pink and thin green into peripheral, ecstatic rivulets. Let's hope that this one, and the others remain in Australia.' (Elwyn Lynn, The Bulletin, 7 August 1971.) The National Gallery of Australia acquired from Gallery A Ruda's painting, Ormolu, 1971, which shares stylistic similarities with Mixing crux and crocks. John Murphy
