    An N.Z. silver and oak choirmaster’s baton
    the silver mount by G. Coats & Co., Christchurch, a central band engraved with presentation inscription to Mr S. (Sidney) Hawker by New Brighton Choir, Sep. 24th 1897. Note Hawker (1871-1956) wrote ‘Young N.Z.’s National Song’, in the same year as the presentation of this baton, the tune was popularised by the Boer War troops. Length 425.
