  Two Fine Old Rennel Island Clubs, Polynesian Outliers in the Solomon Islands, 19th Century
  there are two types of clubs: First is a superb old Throwing Club called Tiangetaha was used in battle when an enemy was running away and could be thrown with great accuracy by men who had practiced since childhood. Carved from a single piece of heavy dark wood, this type of refined Polynesian form Club has eight radial flanges with an elegant tapered shape from the bottom of the handle to the top of the radial flanges. The second is a curved type of Parrying Club

  Collected by Captain RA Williams of the Melanesian Mission Ship the MS Southern Cross late 19th - early 20th Century; The Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic & Asian Tribal Art.
• References:
  According to Monberg in his book on Rennel Island in the chapter on Ritual Paraphernalia Page 171 -174 'Certain objects like Clubs were considered to belonging to the Sky Gods.
• Notes:
  Photos of the Ship MS Southern Cross and an article from the paper article about Captain RA Williams in the Australia Star Newspaper Sydney dated July 30 1892. The Melanesian Mission was founded by George Augustus Selwyn, who was appointed the first Anglican bishop of New Zealand in 1841. He supported the ideal of the 'missionary bishop' and was convinced that missions should be church organizations under episcopal leadership, rather than semi-private societies such as the Church Missionary Society.
