Lot Description:Seven Old Talipun Shell Wealth Objects, Yangoru-Boiken Area, Prince Alexander Mountains, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea
these old Shells are an important type of traditional wealth and currency. They often come with a little woven mask attached but that is only to decorate the Shell Wealth object. The shells were used to pay bridal dowries & you can see in the old photo taken by Gregory Bateson in 1932 where they are displayed as wealth, though the outside looks a grey colour the inside shell has a bright silvery colour. These were used over many generations & they are traded up from the coast to the Prince Alexander Mountains Area.
