A Study of an Australian war horse by Lambert, the official war artist for Australia, appointed in 1917. -
Provenance:Anthony Hordern & Sons Gallery, Sydney, Australia, Lot 129 as, 'Bay Horse', oil on wood. John Joseph Gregory McGirr (11 October 1879 - 23 March 1949), purchased from the above in 1930, at the George Lambert Memorial exhibition. Thence by family decent to the present owner.

Exhibited:George Lambert Memorial Exhibition [1930]: paintings shown at the Education Department's Art Gallery and Anthony Hordern's Art Gallery / photographed by Arthur Ernest Foster Purportedly hung for a period in NSW State Parliament.

Notes:McGirr was an Australian politician who served in the NSW Legislative Assembly 1913 - 1925, representing the Labor Party and was the brother of James McGirr, Labor Premier of NSW.
