Notes:The Olsens travelled to Portugal by boat to Lisbon in mid 1966, living in the enchanting town of Castel de Vide about 15kms north of Portalegre, in Alentejo Province, staying 4 months in a hotel & finding a studio nearby in which to work towards two exhibitions planned for the following year in Australia, one at Clune Galleries in Sydney & the other at South Yarra Gallery, Melbourne & with the difficulty transporting large paintings, Olsen decided to work on a predominantly modest scale. Olsen was enamoured with the story book quality of the town, with it's monthly market days selling all manner of interesting wares, wanting also to capture the feeling of the place he began a figurative exploration making notes & drawings. Works relating to this lot from the same period are Rainy Paseo 1966* & The Fair 1966** each using the inventive application of clearly delineated, vigorous shapes which tumble into on another, the melding & interconnecting of forms which are clearly explored in Paseo on Sunday 1966.
