Notes:Dickerson had for some time been studying the Uki-yo-e prints of Utamaro, Hiroshige and other Japanese print makers when in 1984 he and wife, Jennifer Dickerson, took their first trip to Japan. Jennifer described their visit to Kyoto where they 'saw many Japanese women in ceremonial kimonos, and Bob was struck by their beauty. From this time on he used images of these women, with their fine white faces and calm expressions, in a number of paintings and pastels. He had a sell-out exhibition in 1984 in Holdsworth Gallery, The Face of Japan...'.1 In Kyoto, Dickerson spent some time in the workshops of printmakers, admiring their use of large areas of flat colour and simplified forms and their 'marvellous simple quality of making a statement and that's it...they never try and elaborate on it'.2 These techniques resonated with his own practice and his time in the studios also inspired him to produce a number of highly-sought-after prints of Japanese women from 1985 onwards. 1.
