Notes:Starting out in the late 50s/early 60s, Gareth Sansom has continued to operate by his own rules and has stayed significantly ahead of the pack for over 50 years. One of Australia's most highly regarded artists, Sansom, while deferent to artists such as Francis Bacon, maintains a unique and distinct autographic style based on an exciting blend of colour and confusion. 'I'm trying to find a sort of formalism through a chaotic sort of thing without it verging on anarchy, you know, or cynicism or anti-art'1 Z! 1975 presents the artist at his most elusive, as we find ourselves scanning this canvas for the familiar - letters, numbers and faintly recognizable figures pile on top of one another in a bright scratchy clutter. Despite lacking any formal perspective, the work carries a certain level of depth; the cacophony of amassed shapes and colour occasionally crumpled back to reveal new layers. Z! is one of Sansom's classic surrealist mŽlanges; famously complicated, yet maintaining a lightness that makes the task of interpreting it all the more enjoyable. The sister work to Z!, Figure with Double Pouch (1975), is held in the Queensland Art Gallery collection. 1 Gareth Sansom, Interview with James Gleeson, November 28, 1978
