Notes:Untitled 1966 provides us an exceptional example of Gunter Christmann's evolving late 60s style, self-described by the artist as 'half way between geometric abstraction and Op art'. In a period defined by dynamic experimentation with colour-form, hard-edge abstraction and geometry, in a broader sense, this piece exhibits all the characteristics of this significant point in Australian art history. This work was exhibited in the artist's first solo show, also one of the first shows at the iconic avant-garde Central Street Gallery in Sydney. The painting employs bright colour and crisp geometric shapes to create an energetic work in which each colour field snaps sharply in beside the next. A sense of downward diagonal movement is evoked through the graduating recapitulation of pink and yellow colour fields in hand with the arrow-form blue space - the end result - a vivid and lively work truly representative of the late 60s art scene. 1 Gunter Christmann, Interview with James Gleeson, 19/04/1979
