Notes:Rotation No. 2 assembles three of Hilarie Mais' constructions into one carefully controlled installation. Central to this work is the minimalist grid construction, which has come to be one of the more significantly recognisable features of the artist's work. Carefully balanced and meticulously assembled, these pieces are often presented leaning against a wall to allow the interplay of light and shadow. The artist describes this now iconic trellis form motif as 'an accessible sign, not gender or culture-specific, non-hierarchical, a democratic structure'.1 Shadowing this is the painted canvas, the pattern of interruptions in the wooden beams represented in mirror image, both an artistic and literal reflection of the structure's physical presence. Finally, the small prism combines these sculptural and painterly elements by pushing further out into the viewer's space while maintaining the careful painted line of the other two pieces. Mais' works are included in all of the state galleries, the National Gallery of Australia and private collections worldwide. Rotation No. 3, a similar work purchased from the same exhibition as the present piece, is now in the National Gallery of Victoria. 1 Nick Waterlow, 'Conversations on the work of Hilarie Mais', Art and Australia, 41, No. 2, 2003, p. 240.
