Notes:Gareth Sansom is widely acknowledged as one of the most original and exciting painters of his generation. Sansom has won countless awards and accolades for his work, most notably the John McCaughey Memorial Prize for painting in 2008. In 1991 he was chosen to represent Australia at the 7th Indian Triennial in New Delhi, and in 2010 was selected for the Basil Sellers Prize at the Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne. Significantly, The National Gallery of Victoria has awarded Sansom honorary life membership. Fantasy Island is an exceptional work that originally showed for John Buckley Gallery at the Melbourne Art Fair in 2008 alongside Bisexual Design, The Nanny and Time Machine (all 2008). Later that same year it was illustrated on the cover of the National Gallery of Victoria journal - Gallery Magazine. Unlike the anarchy of many of his other works, Fantasy Island presents a calm, almost serene scene. Our attention is drawn to the central subject; an island of vaguely discernible buildings and objects. The blonde female form looks on as we do, as surrealist in kind as the elements that hover around her. The work of Gareth Sansom can be found in every major public collection throughout Australia, and both the Queensland Art Gallery and National Gallery of Victoria in particular have collected his work in depth. His work has been acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and is represented in private collections throughout Australia, Europe, India, NZ and the USA.
