Notes:A Cruciform Landscape is the cover work of the highly acclaimed exhibition 'Vapour Trails' at the Embassy of Australia in Washington in 2007. Moving away from landscape, Wolfhagen looked to unite the show with an international theme: 'Clouds are an international visual language. Everybody can relate to them. They're a piece of nature that even urban dwellers can spy between the skyscrapers in a cityÉ The wonderful thing about clouds, is that they're in a state of flux, continually massing and changing, so it's about capturing moments... As a painter, I see my rasion d'etre as being a go-between between the high culture and the natural world'1 The work speaks of fleetingness, about the swiftness of time, and about mortality. All at once Wolfhagen expresses his concerns about the future, his love for the place that he has grown up in, as well as 'trying to convey some universal human themes.' One of Australia's best known painters, and probably its foremost proponent of landscapes, Wolfhagen connectedness to the land and sky is unsurpassed. Throughout his career Wolfhagen has exhibited with Sherman Galleries, Sydney and Bett Gallery, Hobart. He is also represented by Karen Woodbury Gallery in Melbourne and Dominic Mersch Gallery in Sydney. His work is held in many public collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, Art Gallery of South Australia, Newcastle Region Art Gallery, New England Regional Art Museum, Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery and Artbank. 1 Gabi Mocatta, Philip Wolfhagen, 'Vapour Trails' 17 May - 15 July 2007, Introduction to the artist & exhibition: Looking for the perfect cloud
