Lot Description:A Superb Old Female Ancestor Figure, Middle Sepik River Area
this sensitively carved figure was probably off of a large cult house post as you can see from the back that she was freed from a lager outdoor sculpture. The house posts for the monumental Sepik House Tambaran ceremonial house were always elaborately carved with ancestors & totemic animals, when the ceremonial houses fell into disrepair the posts and figures were kept as memories of the older village carvers who once made them.
