Lot Description:CAPTAIN SCOTT’S SHIP ‘THE DISCOVERY’: Stereo Card showing ‘The Discovery in Dock, Lyttleton, N.Z.’
photographer ‘J.G. Lamb, Clare Road, St Albans, Christchurch’, circa October-November 1901. -
Notes:The Royal Research Ship “The Discovery” was launched on the 21st March 1901. She departed the United Kingdom for New Zealand less than 5 months later as part of British National Antarctic Expedition. On arrival in New Zealand she was put into dry dock at Lyttleton for repairs to her hull before departing for the Antarctic on 21 December 1901. The Discovery anchored in McMurdo Sound in January 1902 but by March had become fully icebound and remained so until February 1904, when the ice starting to break up and Scott was able to extricate the ship free with use of controlled dynamite explosions, and the assistance of two relief ships.
