Notes:Pieces with this particular type of Hongxian mark can be dated more precisely to 1916 to 1924, and by the hand of Wang Xiaotang (1885-1924), one of the two most famous celebrated painters of Jingdezhen in the early years of the Republic period. In 'Hongxian Porcelain and the Role of Wang Xiaotang', Simon Kwan suggests that Wang may have been employed by the Imperial commission when General Yuan Shikai adopted the reign title Hongxian in an attempt to restore the monarchy to China. See ibid., Orientations, Hong Kong, October, 1991, pp.65-70. He also lists two vases bearing both the Hongxian mark and Wang Xiaotang's marks. Note the striking similarity between the illustrated Hongxian marks with those on the current lot. See also a vase with the same decorative motif and seal mark, Late Chinese Imperial Porcelain, Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, 1980, p.43, no.67.
