Notes:Belt ornaments were a highly important part of attire in ancient China. Belt plaque such as the current lot was popular during the Tang, Liao, and Song dynasties. Silkworm as decorative objects or motif were seen in works of art since as early as the Shang dynasty in jade and metalwork. During the Tang dynasty, silk production reached a pinnacle point, and naturally silkworm and mulberry as decorative motifs have been found in Tang dynasty metalwork. See a leaf-shaped dish, incorporating both the mulberry-leaf shape and the silkworm-motif, the two distinctive design elements in the current lot, Sotheby's, 12 Dec 1989, lot 37. To be sold without reserve
