  • Notes:
John Kalabergo came to Oxfordshire from Italy and established himself as a successful watch, clock and barometer maker. His young nephew Giovanni came over to assist him, but one night in 1852, just outside Banbury, Giovanni reported that his uncle had been shot dead. Suspicion quickly fell upon the nephew. Sent to Oxford, Giovanni was tried, convicted, and sentenced to death for the murder. The case attracted much press attention and a spate of popular ballad writing, so much so, that on the day of execution, some 8000-10 000 people flocked to Oxford to watch the public hanging. Giovanni Kalabergo was the last person to be hanged in Oxford. 'Young Kalabergo is my name|I Brought Myself To Grief And Shame|For murdering my uncle as you may see|As brought me to the gallows tree'
