Notes:Facades' (circa 1942) belongs to the highly important group of images produced by Gleeson during the Second World War and most closely relates to 'We Inhabit the Corrosive Littoral of Habit' 1940 (National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), 'Images of Spring Disguised in Lethal Attitudes of Duty' 1941 (Bendigo Art Gallery), and 'Coagulations on the Maintenance of Identity' 1942 (Private Collection). In these paintings Gleeson constructs theatrical compositions that resemble stage-sets and are populated by statuesque figures that appear to be at various stages of unraveling.
