Two Fine Old Massim Authority Staffs, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, Late 19th to Early 20th Century
carved from hardwood, both finely carved finials depicting Janus Ancestor Figures back-to-back, the stylised arms & legs are covered with incised spiral designs & infill lime decoration, below one of these figures is another pair of Janus figures and more incised designs.
H 82 - 101 cm
Provenance:

Ex George Gray Collection, he was one of the pioneering members of the Queensland Anthropological Society & collector in the early 20th Century; The Todd Barlin Collection of Oceanic Art

These were described to me by the Massim art expert & friend the late Dr Harry Beran as authority and Sorcerers Staffs.
