Lot Description:Rare West Australian Jarrah
Arts and Crafts Cabinet c.1906-1907 Carved by Henrietta May Strickland (1891-1961), (Etta) in the English arts and crafts school style, having mythical dragons and various arts and crafts style motifs Height: 149cm; Width: 85cm; Depth: 44cm Signed E. Strickland back of cabinet doors (and rear of cabinet), together with `WH' monogram for William Howitt (1846-1928). Having a 1907 Perth Arts and Crafts Exhibition label to top rear of cabinet, probably for the Women's Work Exhibition held Perth 1907. Also a carved date, 1907, front and rear of cabinet It is possible this cabinet was constructed under the influence of William Howitt for Etta to carve. William Howitt taught wood carving at Perth Technical School until 1906. He also won awards for carving, including a medal in Paris. His work is held by the Art Gallery of Western Australia. It is recorded that Etta Strickland attended Perth Technical studying woodcarving under William Howitt in 1904. Note: Includes silver gelatine print of Etta Strickland -
