Eleven hand coloured screen prints

Notes:Prints are all contained in a fabric bound box with the first print stating the story of the collection. In 1933 my father the Yiddish poet Melech Ravitch (Bergner) arrived in Australia in search of a Jewish homeland. Earlier the same year he had been in Germany and had witnessed the rise of Hitler to power. A group of Jewish intellectuals in Eastern Europe sent him to Australia to explore the possibility of settling Jews in the furthest and safest place in the world the Kimberleys. He was armed with official permission from the Federal Government in Canberra, a letter from Einstein and an antique Kodak camera. He set out from Alice Springs with an Aboriginal boy who was his assistant and an Italian truck driver. They travelled slowly and laboriously across the desert to the Kimberleys and slowly and laboriously back again. The plan for a homeland was never carried out. No Jew wanted to settle in this distant and strange region. In this group of hand-coloured screen-prints, which are based on an earlier series of paintings, my father appears as kind of Don-Quixote, a man driven to prove to himself that his fantasy was an impossibility.
