Notes:Verso: Handwritten note “STAGE DOOR a piece by Paul Rigby ~1924 - 2006 ~ who was cartoonist to the ‘Daily News’ in Perth, and achieved fame in New York. Painted about 1947 and being priced at twenty guineas, it was then beyond my means as an ex Navy post war student. By about 1952, as I began to earn well, I sought to buy it, finding it lay rolled up in a cupboard with Gordon Raad. Paul generously presented it to me but I responded with a bottle of Houghton's Burgundy, for which I paid four shillings and sixpence (equal in 2010 to $10). Having enjoyed living with it for fifty five years, I read it as a satirical comment on Ham actors hungry for parts in cheaply dressed plays, some happily achieving them."
