Lot Description:FRANCOIS XAVIER BIANCONI (French, 1840-19..?), - Carte Spéciale de le Chine
Rare engraved geo-political French map of China, detailing political and economic spheres of influence of western world powers including France, Russia, Germany, England and Japan. Published in Paris , 1900. Sectioned into 18 panels mounted on cloth backing,
64 x 80cm overall. -
Exhibited:This rare map appears in very few public institutions with only two copies appearing in the public domain, one at the Library Of Congress in Washington, the other at the Bibliotheque National de France in Paris.
-
Notes:As a direct consequence of the events leading to the Boxer Rebellion (1899-1900) and the Eight-Nation Alliance formed in 1900 to suppress the uprising, Bianconi’s map suggests to place various territorial parts of China under the “Protectorate or Control of each of the Great Powers” in order to avoid China’s military and economic expansion.
