Lot Description:A Russian silver Torah pointer and a besamim, marked Moscow, 1873
the torah pointer with a knop finial surmounted by a lion and star of David, tapering filigree decorated standard and hand terminal; the besamim (spice box) similarly decorated with a pierced hinged cover, each marked 84 zolotnik, BC and cyrilic text NA, possibly for assayer Viktor Savinkov -
Notes:A spice box, often made of silver, is used to hold sweet aromatic plants, besamim in Hebrew, that are sniffed as part of the Havdalah service ending Shabbat. In Ashkenazi homes, cloves are a common choice. Sephardic communities use sprigs of various aromatic plants.
