  A Trobriand Islands Staff Finial, Massim Region, Papua New Guinea
  this piece appears to be the top portion of a Massim staff. It has considrable age and shows signs of use, probably from the first half of the twentieth century. The finial is in the style of the great 19th Century Massim artist, Matuaga (see Harry Beran, 'Matuaga, A Nineteenth-Century New Guinea Master Carver'), but is probably not by by him. Attributed to the school of Matuaga. With custom steel stand.
