Notes:The “voice” of this fascinating man and his love of life, people and creativity simply burst from the pages. “After I had given her a cuddle [Joe’s mother in hospital] - she proudly turned to all and sundry and said in a slightly triumphant voice....”this is my son Joe....He has just flown in from London and he’s got Portnoy’s Complaint!”....... She thought “Portnoy’s Complaint” described a young man with bohemian attributes ; after all I had arrived with a beard. “Do you know what “Portnoy’s Complaint” is all about? I spluttered to my mum. And before she could say anything I said....”It’s about a young Jewish bloke who masturbates in all different ways because of a protective and domineering Jewish mother!” My mum looked rather hurt and resentful exclaiming “I don’t want to know about that!”
