Notes:Vallotton studied at the Academie Julian with Toulouse-Lautrec & exhibited with the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1885. He began exhibiting with the Nabis with Pierre Bonnard, Edouard Vuillard, Marice Denis & Aristide Maillol.<R>He came to prominence in the 1890's with his woodcuts, lithographs & illustrations. He was particularly influenced by Japanese woodblocks & he deliberatley simplified form to its most abstract. The Portrait of Puvis de Chavannes is considered one of his masterpieces, which was commissioned by The Studio in 1899<R>Vallotton's work was an important influence on 20th Century Modernism & the Art Deco movement.<R><R>Puvis de Chavannes, studied in Paris under Henri Scheffer 7 Thomas Coutrure, establishing studions in Place Pigalle & Neuilly. He first exhbited in the Paris Salon in 1850. <R>He was one of the first painters to deliberately simplify form & accentuate rhymthmic lines & use non naturalistic colours. By the end of his life he was one of France's most admired artists & a major influence on both the Symbolists & Post-Impressionists.
