Lot Description:1817 LOTTERY HANDBILLS - ENGLAND - THOMAS BISH
Twenty-two different printed handbills advertising an upcoming lottery (Jan.21) each with an engraved illustration of a national “type” and comical verse -- includes ENGLAND, CHINA, RUSSIA, SOUTH AFRICA, ALGIERS, CORSICA (depicting Napoleon), IRELAND and ITALY, etc. Thomas Bish (1779-1843) - English proprietor of lottery offices at Charing Cross, Cornhill and several provincial cities. He was noted for his elaborate lottery promotions. The final English State Lottery was held in 1826. Rag content paper. each approx 13.5 x 7.5cm.” (22 items). -
