Lot Description:An original albumen photograph of “The Southern Cross” about to depart from California
(22x29cm) mounted, framed & glazed together with a card with the hand-written dedication “To: Billy Beausang, With Best wishes, From “Chas” C.T.P. Ulm, 1928”. Overall 48 x 54cm. -
Notes:William (Bill or Liam) Beausang was born in Youghal, County Cork, Ireland on 22 May 1900. He travelled to Australia in 1924 after a distinguished military service and began working with Kingsford-Smith as an engineer in the late 1920s. The image captures the moment of departure, with Kingsford Smith & Ulm piloting the world-famous aeroplane on the historic first flight across the Pacific Ocean.
