Notes:There is a possibility that this fine work is a painting of Mary Ellen Roberts and not a painting by her. While there have been two small works in pastel offered at auction by Roberts, she was much better known for her dressmaking skills. She became a teacher of dressmaking at Sydney Technical College in May 1900 and was later instrumental in the transfer of women’s handicraft courses (including tailor’s cutting, corsetry and lacemaking) to East Sydney Technical College. She was a capable organist, a vice-president of the Feminist Club and the Silk Culture Society of New South Wales. She also found time to establish a much admired garden of native flora at Turramurra.
