Notes:Nolan's 1962-63 African paintings were largely inspired by his interest in the French poet Arthur Rimbaud (1854-91) who spent most of the latter part of his life in East Africa. The painting is probably loosely based on the 1883 photograph of the poet, dressed in white. This work is to be included in the forthcoming book Nolan's Africa, by Andrew Turley.
