Lot Description:A Pair of Matched Chests On Stands, Bareilly, Northern India, Mid 19th Century
one with fitted handled tray, the other plain, each decorated in typical gilt chinoiserie scenes within diaper borders set on foliate and scroll carved stands 96.0cm wide x 64.0cm deep x 106.0cm high, (37 1/2in wide x 25in deep x 41 1/2in high) -
References:For a similar example, see Victoria and Albert Museum, London, museum number 02325, which notes that: 'Bareilly is a city in northern India that in the 19th century was famous for its painted and varnished furniture. Bareilly furniture-makers produced objects in a variety of different decorative finishes, causing some confusion for future generations trying to determine their place of manufacture.'
