Notes:Of Philip Sutton's work, John Russell, eminent author, journalist and 'Sunday Times' art critic since 1951, writes – 'From time to time the idea of an earthly paradise comes off, against all the odds, in English art: Blake and some of his friends could manage it, so could Turner, and Samuel Palmer sometimes, and Augustus John in the best of his Welsh panels. These pictures make us feel that paradise is here, just outside the window if we were only bright enough to recognise it. French painters were very good at it after the Impressionists got going in the 1860's, but they had historical necessity behind them; to find a paradise of one's own and to get it across to other people is quite another business. But it is what Philip Sutton has been attempting in his Interiors – with – Figure which are among the most exhilarating pictures to have been painted since the war'
