Lot Description:[GERMAN P.O.Ws in AUSTRALIA] “Kampspiegel Wochenschrift” (Camp Mirror Weekly)
3 Feb. - 31.March 1918, five different stitch-bound softcover booklets with lineblock covers, 12 pages each, 22.8 x 17.7cm (approx. each). Publication details include “vol. 2, nos. 43-45, 50–51.” -
Notes:The issues comprise 3 Feb., 10 Feb., 17 Feb., 24 Mar. and 31 March 1918. Each cover is illustrated with a lineblock by Carl Ritz, depicting a young internee overlooking Holdsworthy Internment Camp in Liverpool, NSW. Ludwig Schroder published the weekly newspaper Kampspiegel Wochenschrift from April 1917. In April 1918 it was renamed “Kampspiegel Monatshefte” and appeared monthly until December 1918. The edition of March 31 provides some interesting information derived from the report of a Royal Commission into the P.O.W. Camps. It indicates that at 30 June 1917, 5,574 people were interned in the following camps: Holdsworthy (NSW): 4,517; Berrima (NSW): 332; Trial Bay (NSW): 562; Bourke (NSW): 143; Langwarrin (Vict.): 20. Made up, as follows: Germans: 4,183; Austrians: 859; Bulgarian: 1; Turks: 6; Naturalized British subjects: 299; Australian born: 125; Women and children: 101
