Lot Description:19thC Black Forest carved large dog stick stand
the long haired terrier, having inlaid glass eyes and dog collar, stands on his hind legs, standing on a conforming base which incorporates a zinc lined drip pan. as found cracks and hole to top of head probably Brienz circa 1890. *Arenski, Daniels and Daniels 'Swiss Carvings, the Art of the Black Forest', published by the Antique Collectors Club in 2005, illustrates a very similar statue, made by Fuchs Melchior of Brienz, on pp 113. Brienz, in the Bernese Oberland, Switzerland was remarked upon in Baedeker's Travel Guide, as having a population of 2400, of whom 600 persons were employed as woodcarvers, to supply the upper class tourist trade to Switzerland with mementos of the Grand tour. A museum devoted entirely to the art of wood carving may be visited today measures 95cm H x 35cm x 47cm -
