  • Notes:
    This religious scroll painting or Pata from the Midnapur district in West Bengal was used by an itinerant storyteller or patua, who would slowly unfurl it during his performance. The scroll is painted in a sequence of nine panels or registers against red backgrounds, separated by yellow borders, and depicts the story of the princess Savitri and her husband Satyavan, one of the most renowned and much loved tales of India.
